AN EXCEPTION TO THE NORM.

Sportiness, comfort and functionality in one −
the BMW Concept Active Tourer.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer is a completely independent interpretation of the premium compact class. This vehicle not only has an unmistakable design, but also merges comfort and use of space with driving dynamics. At the same time, the BMW Concept Active Tourer combines the unique BMW eDrive concept with the strengths of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. The result: an innovative plug-in hybrid drive system, offering all the benefits of electric motoring – and, at the same time, an outstanding range and BMW typical dynamics.

BMW eDrive

With its harmonious proportions, the BMW Concept Active Tourer exudes a balanced sportiness and nonchalant elegance – whichever way you look at it. Compact dimensions, functionality and variability combine perfectly with a dynamic design. Viewed from the side, the elongated, wedge-like silhouette comes to the fore. Short body overhangs and the long wheelbase make for extraordinary roominess on the inside – while retaining compact dimensions on the outside.

With its open, clear and roomy interior, the BMW Concept Active Tourer creates a new, refreshing feeling of space. The centre console appears to be floating between the front seats and flows seamlessly into the instrument panel, giving both driver and front-seat passenger maximum legroom. Innovatively finished wood surfaces meet lightly tanned leather upholstery and selected cloth variants – a harmonious trio that accentuate the top-quality, roomy interior.

Plug-in hybrid engine

The newly developed electric drive technology BMW eDrive combines driving pleasure with the future. Three components form the core of the concept: an electric synchronous motor, a lithium-ion high-performance battery and intelligent energy management. The BMW developed engine produces more than 200 Nm from a standing start and, with a fully charged battery, can propel the BMW Concept Active Tourer more than 30 km using electrical energy only. As the lithium-ion battery can be charged using a standard 220-volt household socket, most day-to-day journeys can be completed with the electric drive system –emission-free and with all BMW typical characteristics, such as powerful dynamics.

The BMW Concept Active Tourer contains an intelligent hybrid system consisting of a combustion engine and an electric motor. The 1.5-litre petrol engine has the genes of the award-winning BMW TwinPower Turbo straight six-cylinder petrol engine. If necessary, the specially developed electric synchronous motor can power the vehicle independently. The plug-in hybrid engine has an overall system output of 140 kW (190 hp) – ideal for sporty driving with extremely low consumption and emissions. The BMW Concept Active Tourer accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds and has a top speed of approximately 200 km/h. Average consumption is less than 2.5 l/100 km, with CO2 emissions lower than 60 g/km.

Aerodynamics

The BMW Concept Active Tourer offers numerous innovative BMW EfficientDynamics features that are specifically developed to improve aerodynamics. Air vent control opens the vents only when necessary – closed vents are better for aerodynamics and therefore help to reduce fuel consumption. On the front apron and the front wheels, the Air Curtain has two vertical inlets that direct the airstream past the front wheel casings. The accelerated airstream forms a “curtain” on the wheels and reduces turbulence. Above the rear windscreen, Air Blades help to stem the airstream. The special turbine design of the caps of the Aero Mirrors also lead to a decrease in wind resistance, with the Aero Wheels designed according to a similar principle. All features combine to ensure significant reductions in wind resistance – which leads to lower fuel consumptions and CO2 emissions.
