The electrical motors and combustion engines in the BMW ActiveHybrid models work in perfect harmony and are supported by a lithium-ion high-performance battery. The interplay of components is coordinated via an intelligent hybrid system and the result is the highest level of efficiency and dynamics.

Performance Hybrid.

BMW ActiveHybrid models boast markedly lower fuel consumption requirements compared to similar vehicles with conventional engines. This is due to the unique combination of a BMW TwinPower Turbo straight six-cylinder petrol engine, an electric engine and a lithium-ion high-performance battery. These three components are coordinated via intelligent energy management.

The first component of the BMW Performance Hybrid, the BMW TwinPower Turbo engine in lightweight construction has impressively low consumption and emission values. The second is the electric engine, which allows purely electric driving at a speed of up to 60 km/h over distances ranging from 3 to 4 km. In addition, it supports the combustion engine during overtaking manoeuvres, on inclines and in other driving situations in which spontaneous acceleration is desired. The electric engine gets its energy from the lithium-ion high-performance battery.

 

INTELLIGENT ENERGY MANAGEMENT.

The intelligent energy management of the BMW ActiveHybrid models has a far-sighted approach. The optimum operational strategy is selected for all on-board systems and every driving situation. Navigation data is employed to coordinate the use of combustion engine and electrical motor as well as the lithium-ion high-performance battery.

Intelligent energy management.

Intelligent energy management ensures that the combustion engine and the electric one in the BMW ActiveHybrid models work together efficiently and harmoniously. It also coordinated other functions for more efficiency.

For example, kinetic energy is released every time every the driver brakes or decelerates. This energy doesn’t go to waste, but is saved via Brake Energy Regeneration in the lithium-ion high-performance battery. The lithium-ion high-performance battery is characterised by its long life expectancy and is accompanied by a special certificate which offers coverage for the first 100,000 km or a maximum of five years, whichever comes first. When needed, this saved energy can be accessed by the drive train and use at any time to improve the vehicles overall performance: the boost function supports the combustion engine when needed with additional performance from the electric engine – but no additional fuel consumption. This is an advantage particularly when spontaneous, powerful acceleration is desired, e.g. when acceleration and overtaking.

Purely electric, silent – and thus local emission-free – driving is possible at up to 60 km/h for distances of 3 to 4 km. Intelligent energy management automatically controls the interplay of combustion and electrical engine and ensures the best possible efficiency and performance at any given time.

Intelligent energy management also control ‘gliding’. This function is suited to driving on motorways and long road trips and can be used at a speed of up to 80 km/h, or even up to 160 km/h in ECO PRO Mode. The combustion engine is turned off as soon as the driver takes his foot of the accelerator and the vehicle starts to coast. The vehicle uses its own kinetic energy to glide down the street and doesn’t consume any fuel. All the other vehicle systems remain active. In the gliding phase, Brake Energy Regeneration supplies the on-board power system with electricity and uses any surplus energy to charge the high-performance battery.

Intelligent energy management works with Navigation system Professional to provide further consumption and emission-reducing functions. Based on navigation data, the Route-ahead assistant calculates the forthcoming driving situation and prepares the vehicle systems accordingly. The vehicle then automatically adjusts to route-specific elements like ascending slopes, downward slopes or speed limits and selects the optimum time for purely electric driving. If the car is approaching a hill, the electric engine is switched on. The battery is recharged on the subsequent drive downhill.

Also available with the Navigation system Professional is the Route-ahead assistant. In ECO PRO Mode, it supplies the driver with tips for an anticipatory and energy-saving driving style. Based on navigation data, speed and route, it calculates the best moment to stop accelerating in order to keep the car travelling at the most efficient speed possible.
