Unmistakeable dynamics distinguish every BMW. Various technologies for the transmission come into play in order to reach the highest possible level of efficiency. This allows optimal engine performance and further reduces fuel requirements.

AUTO START STOP FUNCTION.

Problem: A running engine in a stationary car wastes energy.
Solution: The engine is turned off when the vehicle has been stationary for some time.
The benefit to you: You get more kilometres out of one tank of petrol.

Problem: Timing is of the essence when changing gears to ensure efficient driving.
Solution: A recommendation of when to change gears in order to stay at the most efficient speed.

8-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

Problem: Dynamic and efficient driving is only possible in the optimal speed range.
Solution: Finely-graduated for the most economical gear ratio at any speed.
The benefit to you: The engine speed stays in an economical range and fuel consumption falls.

How it works

Auto Start Stop function.

The Auto Start Stop function takes advantage of brief stops (e. g. at the traffic lights) and turns off the engine temporarily. When the engine is off, the vehicle neither consumes fuel nor produces emissions. Depending on the transmission, the driver only has to release the brake pedal or engage the clutch for the engine to immediately start up again. Turning off the engine briefly doesn’t impair our safety or comfort in any way.

Gear shift indicator.

Knowing exactly when to change gear is the key to efficiency. The gear shift indicator ensures you always have the upper hand: it calculates the most economical gear based on your driving style, displays this in the driver’s field of vision and indicates with an arrow whether you should shift up or down. The system adjusts to changes; for example, it suggests the appropriate gear to use when accelerating rapidly during an overtaking manoeuvre based on the current engine speed. If the driver follows the advice, the vehicle will always be in the most efficient gear, thus lowering fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

8-speed automatic transmission.

With the development of the 8-speed automatic transmission, BMW engineers have once again succeeded in increasing driving dynamics while simultaneously lowering in emissions. It enables optimum power development at any speed and impresses with the maximum efficiency. The gentle gradation of the transmission means the engine is capable of comparatively low revs even at high speed. And lower revs results in lower consumption as well as less noise. The specially-developed converter clutch amplifies these effects makes changing gears more comfortable: even in Steptronic mode, the driver will barely notice when he changes gear. And the fact that 8-speed automatic transmission can be combined with Auto Start Stop function makes it possible to save even more.
