Variable sport steering.
Distinctive sporting driving dynamics and maximum comfort are by no
means mutually exclusive. At least with the variable sport steering in the
BMW 1 Series 3-door.
Unlike conventional systems with constant steering gear transmission, the
variable sport steering has a high transmission ratio in the central position
and a low ratio for the remainder. As a result, it merely takes two turns of the
steering wheel to move between the two extremes of lock, which pays off in
numerous ways. A smaller steering angle is therefore sufficient to conveniently
negotiate a junction or manoeuvre into and out of parking spaces. However, the
improved handling also increases the sporting factor, which can, for example,
pay off when taking evasive action. At the same time the variable sport steering
guarantees stability on straight stretches and precise steering characteristics.
Interplay with the optional Adaptive M suspension leads to driving characteristics
that meet the maximum demands of sporting character and comfort.
