High tech as the starting point: the BMW ActiveE stores its energy in lithium-ion batteries, the most efficient battery technology at present. BMW has perfected them for the tough conditions in the car. A range of 160 km in real operations is the most visible result.
A distance that is achieved under real conditions, namely when also using auxiliary devices such as headlights and air conditioning. After four to five hours on a charging station, the high-voltage batteries are fully recharged. A cleverly conceived electronics system continuously monitors and controls each individual cell, with the liquid cooling system keeping the cells within an optimum temperature window.
The specially developed battery blocks withstand temperature changes, vibrations and crashes. Strategically positioned beneath the bonnet, in the former transmission tunnel and instead of the fuel tank, they maintain the well-balanced axle adjustment of a genuine BMW and lower the centre of gravity in the ActiveE.
In addition to this, the high-voltage batteries also supply other units. Brake power assist unit, power steering, heating and air conditioning system all function purely electronically; measures from BMW EfficientDynamics which also noticeably increase efficiency in BMW models with combustion engines.
Fuel consumption / CO2 emissions
Combined: 14 kWh/100 km
Urban: 10,5 kWh/100 km
Extra-urban: 16,0 kWh/100 km
4–5 h at 230 V, 32 A
8–10 h at 230 V, 16 A connected to a standard three-wire socket
CO2 emission vary according to the type of electricity production. BMW recommends electricity for regenerative sources. Zero CO2 emissions – from electricity generation to driving the vehicle – calls for electricity from 100 per cent regenerative energies.
Further information about the official fuel consumption and the official specific CO2 emissions for new passenger automobiles can be found in the 'New Passenger Vehicle Fuel Consumption and CO2 Emission Guidelines', which are available free of charge at all sales outlets and from DAT Deutsche Automobil Treuhand GmbH, Hellmuth-Hirth-Str. 1, 73760 Ostfildern, Germany.
