Safety.

Eagerly awaited yet still surprising: the final crash tests demonstrate that the BMW ActiveE, as calculated, meets the high safety requirements demanded by the engineers. And this not only applies to the occupants but also to potential helpers.

More

One requirement is that the entire BMW ActiveE should remain absolutely safe and free of electrical currents even after an accident. To achieve this, the electronics system continuously monitors all the important parameters such as the acceleration sensors of the airbags or charge level and temperature of the individual lithium-ion cells in the high-voltage batteries. In critical situations, the electronics system ensures that the batteries are disconnected from the electrical system of the vehicle and that all components are discharged.

The battery cells themselves are in sturdy boxes that undergo numerous and intensive tests during the production process. They are also positioned in the best-protected sites of the BMW ActiveE: behind an additional crash structure in the front section, in the central tunnel and behind the rear seats, in place of of the fuel tank. Hence it should come as no surprise that the extensive crash tests produced the expected result. The BMW ActiveE is just as safe as other BMW models. Very safe indeed.
