Eight-speed automatic transmission.
The eight-speed automatic transmission allows the driver a significantly higher level of gear-changing and driving comfort thanks to the more finely graduated gear ratios and minimised rev intervals. This combines maximum comfort with the sensation of dynamics and reduced fuel consumption.
The eight-speed automatic transmission is barely larger than the corresponding unit in the conventional BMW 7 Series – and yet it also accommodates the electric engine and the separating clutch. The latter disengages the combustion engine during purely electric driving and coasting in the optional ECO PRO Mode – or engages it again whenever power is needed.
During comfort-oriented driving the new eight-speed automatic transmission impresses with harmonious power development, almost imperceptible gear changes and supremely smooth running. However, the light, friction-optimised transmission also supports an ambitious driving style with higher shifting dynamics and significantly more spontaneous gear changes. In the BMW ActiveHybrid 7, it is combined with a Hybrid Start Stop function – for more dynamics and driving comfort with reduced fuel consumption and fewer emissions.
