The BMW i8 is a plug-in-hybrid that brings together the advantages of innovate electric motor and combustion engine technologies. The result is an extraordinary driving experience – with extremely low consumption and low emissions.

DESIGN.

EXTERIOR.

Long wheelbase, short overhangs, a solid stance as it crouches on the street: the BMW i8 has all the characteristics of a full-blooded sports car. The front appears extremely low and wide. Everything is arranged to be optimally aerodynamic. At the same time, the flat, but prominent double kidney grille reveals the BMW genes. A V-shaped ‘black belt’ starts on the bonnet and dynamically wraps around the bodyshell to the rear. Viewed from the side, the exaggerated wedge shape, the long drawn-out lines and the flat silhouette underscore the dynamics. Layering design, a method in which surfaces and lines overlap and interweave, produces an extremely sporty appearance all round. The surfaces join harmoniously, creating a compact and agile impression. Everything appears to come from a unified whole – thus lending the BMW i8 an extraordinarily powerful stature.

LED LIGHT DESIGN WITH LASER LIGHT.

Standard in the BMW i8, LED headlights fit in perfectly with the exceptional sports car concept. All lighting elements are completely in LED. The front light has a typical BMW i U-shaped frame, which contains the Daytime Running Lights and a built-in indicator. A second broad frame is added as a distinguishing design feature when the optional high-beam headlights with laser light technology* are selected. The model with laser technology also considerably increases the range of the high beam and enhances its illumination. A passively lit blue band signals the innovative technology of the lighting unit. In addition, the side cover of the headlight in the equipment with laser light is not dark but has a brilliant metallic finish. The overall impression of the light concept is unmistakeably BMW i8. * Available from November 2014 onwards.

SCISSOR DOORS.

Off to a swinging start: Thanks to the spectacular scissor doors, the sports car character of the BMW i8 is recognisable in an instant. Swinging upwards when opened, the scissor doors are an optical highlight and blend perfectly into the smooth lines of the aerodynamic bodyshell. When viewed from the inside, the doors underline the sporty nature of the interior. Thanks to the aluminium, carbon and thermoplastic used in their construction, they are approximately 50% lighter than conventionally built doors. As a result, they are particularly convenient to open and close from the inside. The handle is ergonomically positioned on the inside of the door panel and also acts as a decorative feature.

INTERIOR DESIGN.

The sporty look of the exterior is continued seamlessly in the interior of the BMW i8. All elements are light and dynamically positioned. In the interior, the layering principle creates a novel relationship between functionality and clear form. Lightweight construction is also implemented visually; for example, the visible carbon elements in the door sill highlight the low weight of the BMW i8. The classic sports car character and the typical BMW driver orientation are both equally prominent in the design. The centre console is aligned towards the driver. All the instruments and the digital instrument panel with its two large displays are easy to operate. All passengers have a low seating position and the narrow lightweight seats provide reliable support and outstanding of comfort even when cornering rapidly. The iDrive Controller is conveniently located on the centre console that optically bisects the vehicle.

DRIVE.

BMW eDRIVE.

The BMW eDrive technology is the result of many years of BMW EfficientDynamics development work. The full torque of the agile electric motor is available from a standing start and makes for unrivalled driving pleasure. At the same time, an innovative cooling system keeps the high-voltage batteries at their optimum operating temperature, which increases performance and service life. Intelligent energy management coordinates the interaction between the electric motor with battery and the electric motor with combustion engine, and is always geared towards maximum performance with minimum consumption. The result is a powerful and efficient plug-in hybrid system.

BMW TWINPOWER TURBO 1.5-LITRE 3-CYLINDER PETROL ENGINE.

The BMW TwinPower Turbo 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine, which was newly developed as part of the BMW EfficientDynamics strategy, unites all the advantages that one would expect from the power unit of a sports car. Its engine management guarantees optimum charge changing processes across the ignition point and ensures a rapid response from the turbocharger. During operation, the 170 kW (231 hp) engine proves to be extremely free-revving and delivers up to 320 Nm of torque. At the same time, the dynamics and the high performance level are accompanied by outstanding efficiency, as demonstrated by the combined consumption of only 2.1 l/100 km.

DRIVING MODES.

A variety of modes for an exceptional driving experience: COMFORT, ECO PRO, SPORT and the eDrive button optimise the vehicle properties of your BMW i8 to suit the driving situation. 100% electric driving is possible up to a range of 37 km* as is an extremely athletic sports car for out-of-town driving. Between the two lies the best of both worlds: the petrol engine and electric motor constantly demonstrate that their technical symbiosis is never a compromise. Pressing the eDrive button adapts the BMW i8 for purely electric driving. This is possible in the COMFORT and ECO PRO modes. In the COMFORT mode with eDrive, the BMW i8 drives without support from the combustion engine until the battery is almost exhausted. Purely electrical driving at speeds of up to 120 km/h is possible with eDrive. If the button isn’t pressed the combustion engine is activated at 60 km/h. * Determined in internal BMW consumption studies. The driving range is depending on a variety of factors, especially: personal driving behaviour, selected route, weather conditions, usage of heating/cooling and preconditioning.

EFFICIENCY & DYNAMICS.

AERODYNAMICS.

Streamlined body, striking conical shape, low weight – the BMW i8 is undeniably a thoroughbred sports car. An array of aerodynamically optimised features ensure that maximum dynamics are combined with optimum efficiency. Just one example of this are LED rear lights which are created according to layering design principles and act as channels for the airstream.

INTELLIGENT LIGHT WEIGHT CONSTRUCTION.

A systematic lightweight construction is of vital importance for electric vehicles. It’s one of the vehicle’s most expressive traits and influences dynamics, design and efficiency. A lower vehicle weight means faster acceleration, higher agility and maximum efficiency.

LIFE DRIVE ARCHITECTURE.

Sports car proportions meet an extraordinary lightweight concept, in which the engineers have dispensed with every unnecessary gram. The LifeDrive architecture is made up of two units that correspond exactly to the requirements of intelligent lightweight construction. The first component is the Drive module, an aluminium chassis, with the electric motor located in its front section. In the rear part of the Drive module is the 3-cylinder petrol engine. Joining the two sections is the high-voltage battery. The second component of the LifeDrive architecture is the Life module, the ultra-light passenger cell made of high-strength carbon. It also plays a part in compensating for the additional weight of the electric motor and the high-voltage battery. This combination is known as the LifeDrive concept and makes the BMW i8 the forerunner of the hybrid generation. With a made-to-measure lightweight construction concept: the perfect, and efficient, way to bring maximum sportiness and ingenious sustainability to the streets.
