A completely new dimension of driving pleasure: the drive concept BMW eDrive boasts impressive dynamics and, when driven in purely electrical mode, is emission-free locally. The newly-developed synchronous electric motor dazzles with enormous torque that remains constant from acceleration to maximum speed – for sustainable mobility with overwhelming agility.

 

All vehicles with BMW eDrive technology derive energy for electrical driving from a sensational high-tech electrical battery. The powerful lithium-ion high-performance batteries are combines with a cooling system that keeps the battery at an optimal operating temperature and thus increases performance and life expectancy.

Thanks to the interplay between intelligent energy management and efficient brake energy regeneration, the vehicle range is increased significantly. The lithium-ion high-performance battery is characterised by its long life expectancy. The battery can be recharged wherever electricity is available: a regular 220 volt socket is sufficient to supply the battery with fresh energy.

The electric motor in the BMW eDrive concept is a proprietary development by the BMW Group and an integral part of all electric-powered BMW models.

On a fully-charged battery, the electric motor is capable of a maximum range of 30 km in purely electrical driving, e.g. in the BMW Concept X5 eDrive This makes it possible to cover most everyday distances with zero emissions locally.

Depending on driver requirements, the electric motor’s boost function can also be used briefly to achieve particularly powerful acceleration – for instance, when overtaking.

 

ELECTRIC MOTOR.

 

At the heart of the BMW eDrive concept is intelligent energy management. This elaborate system coordinates the interaction of the parts of all BMW drivetrain components with a synchronous electric motor.

Best possible efficiency and performance that’s always available – intelligent energy management’s core task is to guarantee both of these. In addition, it controls further functions from BMW EfficientDynamics that are specially coordinated for drivetrains with a synchronous electric motor.

Intelligent energy management optimises the effectiveness of the electric drivetrain and the high-performance battery with a foresighted operating strategy. Navigation data is used to calculate the optimal time to start driving electrically or charging the battery, in advance, depending in the most suitable route and driving situation. This saves up to ten percent energy – which allows the driver to travel a longer route completely electrically.

Brake energy regeneration ensures that energy released when braking or slowing down is saved in the lithium-ion high-performance battery, where it’s available at any time to increase the overall performance.

With ECO PRO mode, a press of a button is all it takes to gear all vehicle systems towards efficiency – and make intelligent use of energy reserves. In order to do this, intelligent energy management down regulates the comfort functions according to need. In addition, the driver receives tips for particularly efficient driving via the Control Display, to help him increase his maximum range.
