With BMW Night Vision from BMW Connected Drive, the driver can see beyond the headlights’ beams. This allows him to quickly identify potential obstacles or roadside pedestrians and keeps him in control.
A thermal camera behind the BMW kidney grille takes a picture that appears on the Control Display. ‘Warm objects’ like animals or people appear as light forms. The picture is simultaneously analysed by a control device.
It recognises people and determines their position and proximity. It takes the speed and steering angle into consideration to establish whether or not something poses a problem and shows a warning symbol in the video display or in the Control Display, if there is one. In dangerous situations a warning signal is sounded.
The camera can detect forms up to 300 metres away, giving the driver plenty of warning about forthcoming obstacles. When travelling at 100 km/h, for example, this equals seven seconds: more than enough time to take evasive action if required.
The panning function turns the camera image automatically when the vehicle is cornering, enabling the driver to detect obstacles in and beyond the approaching bend. A pedestrian crossing the road, for example, is safely revealed. Entering dark courtyards or garages, or driving on winding roads at night, is easier and safer.
